Managing broadband data traffic, ensuring passengers’ safety and security during their journey, improving travel comfort, providing access to real-time multimedia information on board the trains and at the stations
– these are just few of the challenges that train operators have been facing today for metro lines and light rail systems.
For doing so, train operators need to exploit a variety of telecommunications technologies and, as a result, building up complex, heterogeneous telecommunications networks. In particular, Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems make use of telecommunications systems for continuous, bidirectional data communications between a train and a control room to provide exact train positioning information, maximize line capacity and minimize headways, and in general, manage railway traffic.
👉 The FAST-TRACKS network is properly designed for both Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and Closed-Circuit TV (CCTV) applications and is such that various wireless communication technologies can be implemented interchangeably for carrying vital and non-vital data over the FAST-TRACKS network.
Wi-Fi, Long-Term Evolution and LoRa technologies are all exploited depending on train location and environmental conditions, to efficiently improve data transmission performance.
✅ The redundant FAST-TRACKS network architecture is such that multiple wireless communication technologies are implemented in an intelligent way through cognitive algorithms, also allowing adaption of the transmission frame rate and signal power.
As a result, high-throughput train-to-ground communication can be established.
